BUSES: RUSSIANS' FAVORITE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) - Regular public transport trips are typical of two thirds of Russians while 32 percent do without them. The most favorite means of transportation are buses, being a routine vehicle for 46 percent of Russian citizens, followed by short-distance mini-buses (30%).

These figures are cited in a survey conducted by the Public Opinion Fund in 100 towns of 44 regions and republics by interviewing the total of 1,500 respondents at places of their residence and additionally questioning 600 Muscovites. The statistical mistake does not exceed 3.6 percent.

Indicatively, buses are preferable even in Moscow where they are used daily by 66 percent of residents, leaving behind the subway with 62 percent of Muscovites as regular passengers.

The work of public transport has been appreciated by half of the polled (49%) and criticized by one third (32%). Thus, one can make the conclusion that the situation is the industry is more or less favourable. Moreover, a certain improvement in the work of public transport in their region over the past two-three years has been reported by 28 percent; a turn for the worse is mentioned by 17 percent. No shifts in the sphere have been noticed by 41 percent of respondents.

When a law on replacement of benefits by monetary compensation came in force on January 1, the share of people entitled to cut public transport fares came down by one third, that is from 27 percent of the polled to 18%.
