MOSCOW/CAIRO, February 12 (RIA Novosti) -Russia is taking keen interest in the International Defense Exhibition IDEX-2005 opening in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Saturday, Sergei Chemezov, general director of the Rosoboronexport company, told journalists in Moscow on Friday.

According to a press release issued by the exhibition's organizing committee, IDEX-2005 is to take place from February 12 to 17. It is held by the UAE General Exhibition Corporation and is sponsored by the country's president and Commander-in-Chief of the UAE armed forces Sheih Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. More than 800 companies from 45 countries are expected to take part in the exhibition.

The exhibition is preceded by a three-day scientific-practical conference called `The Situation in Iraq and its Impact on Defense and Security of Persian Gulf Countries`.

According to Mr. Chemezov, Russia's defense industry displays in Abu Dhabi a diverse range of products both of purely military and dual purposes in a vast 1,000 sq. m. Russian-only exhibition hall. The exhibits represent full-scale specimens, models, mock-ups, and chart boards.

According to the Rosoboronexport press service, the Russian stands present exhibits of some 40 major defense companies and organizations. In total, they display over 500 units of high-performance weapons and military equipment, precision instruments, and ammunition for practically all branches of armed forces.

Nikolai Dimidyuk, Rosoboronexport's director at large, told RIA Novosti earlier that the Russian side pinned special hopes on IDEX-2005 visitors' interest in the new Russian-made laser range-finders enabling the operator to disable the enemy's optical equipment at a distance of 2-3 kilometers.

In addition, bearing in mind the large number of infantry combat vehicles (BMP-3) in Kuwait's armed forces, Rosoboronexport plans to exhibit a full-scale specimen of the vehicle's modernized version.

The Russian exposition also includes the Iskander-3 short-range missile system, unique for its target-hit characteristics, as well as the Kornet-3 anti-tank missile system, the company's press service said.
