NOVGOROD HOSTS ICE CAR RACE

VELIKY NOVGOROD, February 14 (RIA Novosti's Andrei Letyagin) - The vicinity of Veliky Novgorod, in Russia's northwest, is hosting an ice car race Friday, February 19, reports the Novgorod regional administration press center.

The event, in Kolmovo township, is coming as third stage of short-distance car racing national cup, and initial stage of the ice racing national cup.

A two-kilometer route has been laid along the Volkhov river. The racers will drive Russian-made and foreign cars with 1.4, 1.6 and 2-liter engines-open class, and team and individual classification.

The long-established race is expected to gather drivers from Moscow and its environs, and from many parts of European Russia's north-the Leningrad, Vologda, Murmansk, Novgorod and Pskov regions, alongside rivals from Ukraine, Belarus and the post-Soviet Baltic countries.

To finish Sunday next, the upcoming race is dedicated to the 60th World War II victory anniversary and the 61st, of Novgorod liberation from nazi invaders.

Last year's Novgorod ice race brought all gold to Moscow and St. Petersburg contestants.

The present race was initially appointed for January 22-23, but was put off on several occasions with bad weather.
