GEORGIA TO DO WHAT IT CAN TO REVIVE LINKS WITH RUSSIA: NEW PREMIER

TBILISI, February 15 (RIA Novosti) - "We failed to start friendship with Russia-but we shall do what we can to become its partner," prime-ministerial nominee Zurab Nogaideli said to Georgia's parliament.

Either to make concessions to Russia or confront it is the last thing Georgia wants to do in its policies, he stressed. "Georgian-Russian contacts are an extremely involved and many-sided matter, linked to a great many problems."

Mr. Nogaideli regrets the latest Georgian-Russian negotiations at a state delegation level came to nothing. Georgia's Foreign Ministry hosted the talks last week.

"We expect Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, here in Tbilisi. He is due to come in two days on what will be a very important routine visit. We hope our contacts will bring certain improvements in bilateral relations, especially on particular burning issues. That is why I shouldn't like to make forecasts for upcoming talks, and for the progress of our bilateral relations," said the prime-ministerial candidate.

"It is not a round or two but final understandings on essential matters that determines negotiation achievements," he added.

"If a country has lost some territories, to regain them and reinstate national unity will always stay top priority. Otherwise, no Cabinet can say it has done its duty, whatever success it might score in other fields," Mr. Nogaideli has said.
