MOSCOW, February 17 (RIA Novosti) - Norwegian Liv Arnesen and American Ann Bancroft will try to become the first women to cross the Arctic Ocean.

Their journey will start on February 21 from the Arctic Cape, Russia. "It depends on the weather but we hope to go on ski on February 21," Liv Arnesen told RIA Novosti.

The travelers plan to finish their journey on June 1, 2005 on Canadian territory.

"We are to move on the ice covering the ocean," Ms. Arnesen said adding that sometimes they will have to swim in special suits.

According to Ann Bancroft, they realize the danger of this expedition. If we see that the ice is to thin we shall turn back, she noted. We do not want to risk our lives, Ms. Bancroft added.

An educational program for children will be made on the basis of their expedition. Moreover, the journey will be dedicated to the peaceful settlement of conflicts, Liv Arnesen said.
