TEHRAN, February 18 (RIA Novosti, Nikolai Terekhov) - Spokesman for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hamid Reza Assefi holds the view that the latest anti-Iran statements by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are caused by Washington's irritation at Iran's headway.

"Ms. Rice's utterances are based on Washington's nervous irritation at the Islamic Republic's headway and the inability of the White House to impose its policy on Iran," the press service of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Mr. Assefi as saying in a talk with RIA Novosti on Friday.

Speaking in the US Senate on Wednesday, Ms. Rice called the reign of the regime in the Islamic Republic vis-а-vis the Iranian nation unlawful.

"The groundless and repeated US claims testify to Washington's hopelessness and disappointment caused by the split between the American people and the high-placed White House officials," the Iranian diplomat went on to say.

"The latest mass participation of the Iranian nation in the demonstrations (on February 10, 2005) held to mark the 26th anniversary of the Islamic revolution's victory put Washington beside itself again," the Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

Mr. Assefi also accused the White House of pursuing a policy of double standards on the problem of terrorism, and condemned the USA for supporting Israel which, as he put it, has been pursuing "state terrorism" strategy.
