MOSCOW, February 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's inhabitants negatively estimate the activity of the Prosecutor-General's Office twice more often than positively (32% and 16% respectively). The correlation between those who trust this institution (17%) and those who mistrust it (40%) is even less favorable for the Prosecutor-General's Office.

This is clear from the data circulated by the Public Opinion fund. Sociologists obtained them in the course of the representative All-Russian poll held on February 12-13 in 100 populated areas of 44 Regions, Territories and Republics of Russia by the interview method in places of their residence. As many as 1,500 respondents all across Russia and 600 Moscow residents participated in it. The statistical error does not exceed 3.6%.

Only 19% of the polled think that in its activity the Prosecutor-General's Office is guided exclusively by law, whereas 55% are sure that it also takes other considerations into account. Some respondents (7%) believe, however, that is must follow not only the letter of law (they deem this department to be duty-bound to act in accordance with common sense and conscience) but a majority (81%) insists that the Prosecutor-General's Office must be guided only by law and nothing else in its work.

The attitude of Russia's citizens to Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov is more indifferent (27%) or good (13%) than bad (6%). Though the structure headed by Mr. Ustinov rouses many censures, only 14% of the polled say that he does not cope with his job, whereas 16% believe that he copes with it.
