OSCE ON ELECTIONS IN MOLDOVA

CHISINAU, March 7 (RIA Novosti) - Elections in Moldova are in line with international standards despite certain violations, believes the OSCE, said the head of the OSCE delegation making part of the international mission on election monitoring, Kimo Killyanen.

"Elections in Moldova on the whole were held in line with the standards of the OSCE, PACE and EU," Killyanen said at a press conference in Chisinau.

At the same time he noted that there were a number of violations.

"The fact that these elections on the whole were in line with the OSCE standards was darkened by a number of negative aspects: in particular, unequal conditions were created for election participants and mass media were hindered from covering these elections - Moldova was shown these faults back at the 2003 elections. These faults are incompatible with the notion of democracy," said the OSCE representative.

Observers note that for residents of Transdniestria (self-proclaimed republic on Moldovan territory), very few polling stations were opened.

"For 600,000 residents of the region, only nine polling stations were opened," said Killyanen.

PACE mission head Andre Kvakkistad said: "We long ago raised the issue of reducing the election threshold in Moldova down to 4%, for it to be in line with the common European norms, but the Moldovan authorities have not done this."

In his opinion, "this influenced the alignment of forces in the future parliament."

Europarliament mission head Marian Nico said the international mission noted the lack of equal access to the mass media for election participants.
