"We shall be at one for Russia's sake. The Khatyn and Beslan tragedies are of one root. We shall be doomed unless we see to that root, and join hands against the new plague.
As Russia was waging its Great Patriotic War against nazi Germany, in 1941-45, "churches, mosques and synagogues were all collecting donations to form armored units and offer other all-round assistance to the frontline.
"We recall our Victory only when its anniversary is approaching. Herein lies our trouble," said Rabbi Shayevich.
"Young Russians seldom see any movies but American thrillers," he went on, with deep regret. "It pains me to hear allegations of the Soviet Union as not principal victor in World War II.
"We shall remember, as we have, what the Red Army did to liberate the many death camps and ghettos. I am making this pledge on behalf of the many European Jews."
"To me, my Christian and Muslim brethren mean Russia," added the Chief Rabbi.
