UNESCO TO HELP RESTORE CHECHEN MUSEUMS

GROZNY, March 12 (RIA Novosti) - UNESCO will help restore the museums and build an academic township for students in Chechnya, executive secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry's commission for UNESCO affairs Grigory Ordzhonikidze said at the meeting with Chechen President Alu Alkhanov on Saturday.

"UNESCO decided to ask museums of the world to allocate their one-day earnings to assist the restoration of museums of the Chechen Republic," Mr. Ordzhonikidze said. These are only the first steps towards the restoration of Chechen cultural resources.

"Six experts have arrived in Chechnya to determine its most urgent cultural needs," he reported. According to him, the first UNESCO office in Russia will be opened in Chechnya.
