At first the head of state laid a wreath to the Eternal Flame memorial in the Park of Tank Drivers. This memorial was unveiled to commemorate Soviet warriors killed during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) in the Oryol region.
When the orchestra was playing solemn music, Vladimir Putin smoothed out the tricolor ribbons on the wreath made of red carnations.
Governor of the Oryol region Yegor Stroyev, presidential special envoy to the Central Federal District Georgy Poltavchenko, Presidential aide Alexander Abramov and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov attended the ceremony.
The administration of the Oryol region will host a session of the Victory Russian organizing committee. It was set up in 2000 to perpetuate the memory of the Great Patriotic War.
The committee comprises representatives of the state authorities and prominent military, public and religious figures. The committee's chairman and first vice chairman are President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.
After the session Putin is expected to meet with governor of the Oryol region Yegor Stroyev and visit the regional center of the war and labor veterans in the village of Dobry in Oryol's outskirts.
