SYRIAN PRESIDENT, RUSSIAN MINISTER DISCUSS ECONOMIC COOPERATION

DAMASCUS, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - Syrian President Bashar al-Asad and Russian Regional Development Minister Vladimir Yakovlev discussed a number of major economic projects in Damascus on Sunday.

"The president backed all agreements achieved at the sessions of the Russian-Syrian governmental commission," Yakovlev told RIA Novosti. In his words, several important agreements were made during his meeting with the president, particularly, in the sphere of oil and gas production.

"The Syrian side wants Russian companies to keep working on its territory and start new ventures here," Yakovlev noted.

Moreover, the Syrian president and the Russian minister discussed joint construction of a number of major hydroelectric projects, for instance, the hydroelectric power plant on the Euphrates River, Yakovlev said.

According to him, Bashar al-Asad was interested in the development of productions capacities of plants producing nitrogen fertilizers and tires.

"Russian businessmen are interested in these projects," the Russian minister stressed.

The sides also considered the development of tourism and cooperation in the banking sphere, he added.
