JOINING WTO WON'T MEAN ECONOMIC PROBLEMS

MOSCOW, April 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian economy will not experience turbulence after the country's accession to the WTO, Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin told reporters Tuesday.

"There are no problems today, nor will there be any later," Kudrin said, noting that in previous years Russia lived through "even more substantial structural manoeuvres."

According to Kudrin, entry into the WTO would liberalize foreign trade, annul export duties, except on energy sources and gradually lower import duties.

Kudrin also said that in the past few years, the Russian ruble has strengthened by 40%.

"This means that our imports have become 40% cheaper and the prices of our exports have risen by 40%," he said. "In other words, we have disarmed ourselves in many respects in the face of our rivals."
