"We are treating the recommendations given in Annan's report as those designed to ensure the UN's central role, which is in line with the interests of Russia and the majority of the international community members," Fedotov said in an interview with RIA Novosti in view of the discussions on the Annan's report on the need to reform the UN by the 2005 summit. The discussions will begin on Wednesday.
"It is a comprehensive report, it encompasses the UN's main activities, i.e. economic issues, security threats, terrorism, environment protection, and human rights. The document is seen as positive in general," said Fedotov.
Moscow is working to amend some of the document's aspects, discussing them with other countries, for example, the decisions Annan suggested adopting before the UN summit, due to take place in New York this September.
"Our strong belief is the reform should not be implemented for the sake of reform, but for increasing the efficiency of multilateral tools. In addition, the reform must be based on international law and procedures stipulated in the UN Charter," said Fedotov.
