MOSCOW, April 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian national team suffered its first loss on Tuesday at the ice hockey world championship among juniors held in the Czech Republic. Early in the tournament, the Russians were beaten by their peers from Canada who defeated the team coached by Mikhail Slipchenko 6:3 (2:1, 2:1, 2:1).

Ilya Zubov scored the first goal on the third minute, however, Canadians had scored two in return before the first break. The second puck Russian goalkeeper Ilya Proskuryakov missed was especially vexing, because the Russians had the advantage of the power play.

In the second period, Canadians almost routed their Russian counterparts, but 16 seconds before the break Igor Makarov scored another goal, thus reviving his team's hope for the successful outcome.

The hope was bolstered with Igor Sopin minimizing the gap in the score on the 47th minute to 3:4. However, Canadians carried the day, with two accurate goals on the 54th and 60th minutes determining the winner of the match.

The defeat robbed the Russian team of a chance to take first place in their group and go directly to the semifinals.
