The regiment forms part of the FSO and has the status of a secret service. The Presidential (Kremlin) Regiment is subordinate directly to the Russian Federation's president - the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
"A foot and equestrian guard mounting ceremony which is held in the Kremlin on Saturdays will take place on the Regiment's Day. The Presidential band and a number of other military bands, including foreign ones, will participate in it," Mr. Devyatov said.
April 8, 1936, when the Battalion of Special Destination was re-organised into a Regiment of Special Destination by order No.122 for the garrison of the Moscow Kremlin is considered to be the birthday of the Presidential Regiment. The unit's day is marked on May 7. The Presidential Regiment is presented to the president of Russia on this day every year.
From 1924 to 1935 the Kremlin cadets performed duty near the entrance of the Lenin Mausoleum where a post of honour was set up upon the decision of the All-Union Central Executive Committee Presidium. Further on, till October 1993 this task was assigned to the Regiment's servicemen.
On May 8, 1967 the Kremlin Regiment's servicemen participated in the ceremony of unveiling the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial in Alexandrovsky garden.
In keeping with the federal law On Perpetuating the Victory of the Soviet People in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, a permanent post of the guard of honour from-among the servicemen of the Presidential Regiment was set up near the Eternal Flame on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of December 8, 1997.
