MOSCOW, April 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian embassy officials in Hungary are trying to find out the reasons behind the detention of three fellow countrymen in Budapest earlier today.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has said it will make sure that all necessary assistance is provided for the detainees.

The Russian nationals Vladimir Slivyak, Gosman Kabirov and Ramis Faizulin were apprehended by Budapest police on Tuesday as they were trying to get into the office of Hungary's Prime Minister so as to discuss with him the issue of nuclear waste exports into Russia. All the three are environmentalists, campaigning for an organization known as Ekozashchita (Environmental Protection).

The men have been in custody for more than five hours now, but no charges have yet been brought against them. Slivyak told RIA in a telephone conversation that as soon as they were arrested and brought into the detention center, he and his colleagues demanded that the police should inform Russian embassy officials about their whereabouts and that a doctor be sent for to take care of Faizulin, who was feeling unwell.

According to Slivyak, Faizulin has now been given medical attention and the men have been provided with an interpreter and a defense lawyer.
