CLAIMS AGAINST RUSSIA IN REGARD TO COPYRIGHT PROTECTION NOT ALWAYS GROUNDED - FOREIGN MINISTRY

MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - Claims against Russia in regard to intellectual property rights protection are not always grounded, said the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The problem of intellectual property rights violation certainly exists. But this problem is international in its nature, and Russia is no exception here," the ministry said.

Russian laws on intellectual property ensure an adequate and efficient protection of relevant rights, reads a ministry statement.

"Russia is a participant of a great number of big international agreements in this field, and up until now, it has not given a cause to question the good faith of implementation of its commitments. In this connection, the straightforward question about the necessity to press Russia for reinforcing the intellectual property protection arouses bewilderment," the Foreign Ministry said.

"The Russian authorities are taking complex, and, in our opinion, rather efficient, measures to fight such violations," the ministry said.

"Criminal proceedings are launched, investigation started, counterfeit goods are confiscated and destroyed, and enterprises involved in unlicensed production are closed."

A government commission to counter violations in the intellectual property sphere has been created to coordinate Russian departments' activity.

"The commission is working on a number of measures aimed to ensure efficient protection of intellectual property rights," the Foreign Ministry said.
