RUSSIA SET TO RATIFY BORDER AGREEMENT WITH CHINA

Subscribe
MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has submitted an additional agreement on the Russian-Chinese eastern border to the lower house (the State Duma), the Kremlin press service reports.

The agreement will eliminate a potential source of instability and unpredictability in bilateral relations, which meets Russia's interests and will foster strategic partnership with China and stimulate development of the border areas.

The agreement will determine the border in two areas - on two islands on the Argun, Amur and Ussuri rivers (Siberia and the Far East). Both areas (about 375 square kilometers) will be halved. They account for less than 2% of the total border (over 4,300 km).

This section of the border remained uncoordinated when the USSR and China signed the 1991 agreement.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been appointed the president's envoy for the parliamentary debates.

The additional agreement is delimitating. The border will be completely determined during demarcation.
