RUSSIA'S POTENTIAL CABLE TV MARKET, 30 MILLION APARTMENTS

MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - In the estimate of experts, only from two to three percent of people in Russia are using cable television. The Cable Television Association cites a figure not more than 20 million users of cable networks. The average Russian cable network is designed to service from 5,000 to 10,000 potential users, the daily Business reports.

The Russian association registers over 100 regional companies. The most saturated and developed from the point of view of cable television are Moscow and St.Petersburg. First deputy general director of the company Mostelecom Vadim Yakunin says that the operator cable network is covering almost all of Moscow.

Annual profits of operators of Russian cable television constitute about 120 million dollars. The companies themselves estimate the volume of the cable television market at about 100,000,000 dollars, the newspaper writes.

Cable companies have for several years been expecting an explosive growth on the market of toll television. They cite the example of Europe, where 30 percent of the population watch cable television. The potential viewership of cable television in Russia is 106.6 million people.

In the opinion of managing partner of the company Delta Private Equity Partners Kirill Dmitriev, this market may increase by 40 to 50 percent in Russia already this year. According to the Russian Information Technologies and Communication Ministry, 16.2 billion dollars will be required for unfolding a full-fledged system of television and radio broadcasting by 2010.
