KALININGRAD, May 18 (RIA Novosti, Anatoly Nilov) - Russia's Baltic fleet marks its 302nd birthday. The fleet's press service said the festivities had begun with hoisting the naval flag at the ships and holding of meetings with veterans' participation.

"The museum of the Baltic fleet has opened an exhibition for the date. Veterans of the fleet and the best servicemen are honored. Every unit will give Valor Lessons and amateur art concerts. Marking the birthday of the Baltic fleet, seamen have no doubt that through their efforts and the labor effort of the entire country Russia will remain a great maritime power," the interviewee said.

He added that the Baltic fleet is Russia's oldest. "History of the Black sea, Pacific and Northern fleets is rooted in the Baltic. All their victories are a development of the glorious deeds of Peter the Great. He nurtured in the Baltic sea the cradle of the Russian navy. Its birth in 1703 signified the birth of a new Russia," the press officer said.

To him, "despite the old age of the Baltic fleet, over 70 percent of its vessels and submarines were built only in the end of the 20th century. With them the fleet is meeting the permanent combat-readiness requirements."

"On an average, over 90 percent of them are ready at any moment to take to sea and meet the missions set in the near and faraway zones in the World Ocean. Top-quality and reliable equipment is adopted by the Baltic air force, air defense and coastal troops. The process of modernization and replacement by updated facilities is on, though not as fast as one would like it to," the interviewee said.
