CONTRACT SOLDIERS TO PROTECT RUSSIAN-FINNISH BORDER

HELSINKI, May 19 (RIA Novosti, Olga Andrianova) - Very soon contract servicemen will protect the Russian-Finnish border, Colonel-General Ilya Puzanov, commander of the Leningradsky military district, told a news conference on Thursday in the city of Sodankyla in the north of Finland.

He said: "Three fourths of the servicemen protecting the Russian-Finnish border are active servicemen and a fourth are contract soldiers." "This ratio should change," he said.

Puzanov stressed that "the Russian army is following the course of the Finnish armed forces, focusing on the quality rather than the quantity of servicemen."

Winding up his three-day visit to Finland, in Sodankyla Puzanov was an observer in the local military exercise.

In Helsinki he had a meeting with Finnish commander-in-chief Admiral Juhani Kaskeala and discussed bilateral security cooperation and exchanged experience, the press service of the Finnish army reports.

After that, Puzanov inspected Finnish military units in Rovaniemi, Rovayarvi and Sodankyla in the country's north.
