MOSCOW, May 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Saturday launch of the Russian Proton-M missile vehicle carrying the US communications satellite DIREC TV-8 from the Baikonur space center has been postponed and will now take place on May 22, a spokesman of the Khrunichev Center, a Russian state-owned space research and production enterprise incorporated into the ILS (International Launch Services) Russian-US joint venture, told RIA Novosti.

According to him, the launch was rescheduled for 'a reserve date' due to technical reasons. He refused to give more details.

The launch is now to take place at 21.59 Moscow time Sunday.

When in orbit, the DIREC TV-8 will be able to provide quality communications services in the Ku range, with users in the USA gaining access on request.

The satellite is capable of providing high-quality services and features an enhanced rapid encoding facility. It carries 16 high-performance transponders designed to secure quality broadcasting in the digital format.

The satellite is based on the time-tested LS-1300 platform manufactured by the Space Systems Loral company. The platform for geostationary satellites LS-1300, which has proved its high reliability in previous operation, is designed for 15 years of service. It maintains the required orbit parameters with the aid of the bipropellant propulsion system as well as the automatic movement control system.

In addition, a bloc of high-performance solar batteries and lightweight accumulators provide a continuous supply of power. The satellite is designed to generate up to 8,500 Wt at the end of its service life, even though it is going to weigh less than 3,800 kg when separated from the launch vehicle.

The DIREC TV-8 satellite has been registered with the International Communications Union and is going to operate in the specified orbital location of 101 degrees of west longitude. In addition, the satellite will be able to work in the orbital locations of 110 and 119 degrees of west longitude owned by the DIREC TV company.
