FREEDOM OF SPEECH RALLY NEAR OSTANKINO TV CENTER

MOSCOW, May 22 (RIA Novosti) - On Sunday, a sanctioned rally in support of freedom of speech took place near the Ostankino TV center (northern Moscow). The center hosts the major Russian TV channels. Representatives from Yabloko, KPRF, Our Choice and National-Bolshevik parties participated in the rally. The participants carried posters with slogans "Freedom of Speech" and "Freedom and independence to television."

At the site of the rally, Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky, Our Choice leader Irina Khakamada, and a KPRF leader Ivan Melnikov addressed the crowd gathered in front of the TV center. In their speeches they criticized censorship on TV.

The rally went on in an organized manner. According to the police, no incidents were registered. Contrary to the number indicated in the original list (1,000 people), about 500 people participated in the rally.

"Nobody has been detained during the rally. Everything went smoothly and without violation of law," the Moscow Main Police Department said.

He said the rally ended a bit earlier than the organizers had planned.
