IT'S UP TO CHECHENS TO WORK FOR LAW AND ORDER IN CHECHNYA: PRESIDENT PUTIN

VESHENSKAYA (Rostov Region), May 25 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin said that it was for Chechens to reinstate law and order in their republic.

He attended a gathering of atamans (chiefs) of Cossack military communities in Veshenskaya, large Cossack village in the Rostov Region, south of Russia.

"There are only Chechens on the regimental personnel. Formed with support from the federal Interior Ministry, the regiment is steadily growing efficient."

"They quite recently made another five arrests. All the captured men had been plotting terror acts in and outside Chechnya. They [police] know whom to track down, and where to look for them. They are really efficient-too audacious, on occasions, but they are a success."

President Putin called not to set off Cossacks against such Chechens, Kabardians and members of other Caucasian ethnic entities who were determined to fight terrorists. "On the contrary, you ought to join hands with them," he said.

Several atamans spoke up during the conference for people of other ethnicity to join Cossack communities.

"That will make efforts against crime and terrorism truly effective," said the president.

He said that "anti-terror combating is primarily government bodies' duty," while all other organizations ought to come in as auxiliaries.

"The work will never bring desired fruit unless it (the government) enjoys support from the local population," said Putin.
