The interpellation is due to the minister's saying in public on Friday that he had met in Riga with disgraced Russian oligarch Boris Berezovski, put on international search and now residing in Britain. The Latvian Foreign Ministry had categorically denied the fact of Berezovski's stay in Latvia. Parliamentarians say that Jekabson has assumed too much responsibility and was to consult with the Latvian government.
Moreover, they do not like it that "Jekabson has many times lied to the public and the mass media."
So far, the Latvian prime minister has not answered to the Novoye Vremya party.
Berezovski had arrived to Riga back on February 25 with British documents. He remained in Riga for only six hours and made no public declarations.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had momentarily requested Berezovski's extradition to Russia but the Latvian authorities refused and would not recognize the fact of the oligarch's stay in Latvia.
In the Friday interview to the newspaper Diena, Erik Jekabson admitted that he had a personal meeting with Berezovski for learning why he had come to Latvia.
