VLADIVOSTOK, June 10 (RIA Novosti's Anatoly Ilyukhov) - The Russo-Japanese search and rescue (SAR) exercise began in the Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Far East, on Friday.

Russia contributed a large antisubmarine ship Admiral Vinogradov, a missile speedboat, and aircraft and a helicopter, while Japan contributed the destroyer Hiei.

According to the exercise's legend, SAR services receive a Mayday signal from the captain of a vessel in distress on the high seas. An aircraft and a naval helicopter were sent to search for it.

They found the distressed vessel and the Hiei, the Admiral Vinogradov and the missile speedboat were dispatched to the designated area.

The Russian and Japanese seamen will hold a joint SAR operation on the high seas.

The destroyer Hiei was on a visit in Vladivostok from June 6 to 10. It was the first time in the history of bilateral relations that a commander of the operational staff of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces visited Vladivostok.
