Some people see the causes in the undermining activities of the U.S. and other western countries (18%) and striving of Islamic radicals, fundamentalists and terrorists for seizing power in Uzbekistan (12%). According to 18% of the respondents, the reason is President Islam Karimov's dictatorship violating freedoms and rights of Uzbek people, while 9% of the polled mentioned the dissatisfaction of drug dealers and criminals with the Karimov rule. Seven percent see the influence of the recent revolutionary events in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
The actions of the Uzbek leadership to suppress the disorders were too tough and left many people killed, 40% of the respondents said. However, 27% said that it was justified.
According to 35% of the polled, the Russian leadership should influence on the situation in Uzbekistan for the sake of observation of human rights and democracy in the country. However, 22% said that Moscow should not react to these events, while 4% proposed to support the Uzbek opposition and establish close links with it.
This nationwide poll involved 1,581 respondents in 153 settlements of 46 Russian regions, territories and republics. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
