"Russia wants to be involved in the development of the energy sector, above all, in the fields of natural gas, hydroelectric power plants and alternative energy sources," Fox told a news conference after talks with the Russian president.
According to Fox, he had had a detailed discussion of all these issues with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
"Russia is interested in deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico," Fox said. "Mexico does not have the necessary equipment, and so is also interested in this cooperation,"
Putin said that energy cooperation was not limited to joint hydrocarbon production in Mexico.
"Hydrocarbons are an extremely important sphere of our potential cooperation," Putin said. "But I would like to stress: We are already cooperating in the electric power, primarily engineering for the electric power sector."
He said Russian companies already supplied equipment to Mexico and the two countries might expand cooperation in this sphere.
In addition, Putin said that Russia and Mexico had good prospects in nuclear energy, and added that Russian companies were already supplying nuclear fuel to the Mexican market.
