Russians prefer family to state

MOSCOW, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - If Russians were to choose between the interests of their families and the interests of their country 69% would prefer the former, while 23% would put their country first, according to a new poll conducted by the Levada Center.

During a similar survey conducted in March 2001, 65% of those polled preferred family to the state, while 28% said the state interests were a priority.

In 2001, 53% of Russians put the country's interests above their own and 37% preferred their interests. In 2005, 52% placed their personal interests above those of the state, while 41% prioritized state interests.

The poll was conducted among 1,600 people in 128 settlements in 46 regions, with a 3% statistical error.
