Russia commemorates Nazi Germany's attack on the Soviet Union

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Military units in Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky in Russia's Far East honored the fallen in World War II.

WWII veterans attended a remembrance dinner after the ceremony.

VLADIVOSTOK (Far East). Russian Pacific Fleet officers and veterans laid flowers and wreaths at the Pacific Fleet Military Glory memorial.

The veterans were rewarded medals.

More than 200,000 people from the region were killed between 1941 and 1945.

KRASNOYARSK (Siberia). War veterans, former labor front workers, members of veterans' organizations and delegations from across the region came to the city for the ceremony at the Victory Memorial.

Krasnoyarsk residents and guests observed a minute of silence in memory of those killed in WWII. Anyone could enter the Glory Pantheon to lay flowers to the perished.

IRKUTSK (on Lake Baikal), Alexander Batalin. The city commemorated those who fought on WWII fronts Wednesday, which marks the 64th anniversary of Nazi Germany's attack on the Soviet Union.

The local veterans council said the names of more than 99,000 MIA's from the region had been entered in a book of remembrance.

PERM (western Urals). A book containing memories of World War II veterans was released here Wednesday in commemoration of the day Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union, said Oksana Brezgina, a local administration spokesperson.

"The book entitled "Memories of the War" comprises material prepared as part of The Living Voices of History, a project that was carried out in the region ahead of the 60th anniversary of the victory over Nazism," said Brezgina. "Young people recorded the reminiscences of war veterans and labor front workers about those days."

Brezgina said volunteers conducted more than 140 interviews and made 134 audiotapes when they met with veterans in towns and villages across the region.

The book also comprises Perm school students' best compositions about the war's effect on their families.
