Poll: Russia developing in wrong direction

MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - A poll conducted by the Public Opinion Fund found that 46% of Russians say the country is developing in the wrong direction.

According to the poll, 55% of the respondents said there were more negative events and changes in the country than positive developments and only 23% of them disagreed.

The poll concluded that 75% of the respondents mentioned various negative developments in the country as compared to 30% who mentioned positive events.

People are most frequently dissatisfied with price growth, inflation, low wages and declining living standards (26%). Many respondents spoke about the rising crime rate and the absence of law and order in the country (16%) while other respondents mentioned terrorism (9%).

Social problems concern 21% of the respondents and 9% of this number mentioned unemployment. Other social problems like drug addiction, alcoholism, medical care and education were mentioned less frequently.

Wage and social benefit increases were the positive events most frequently mentioned by the respondents (9%). Also, 5% of those polled spoke about positive changes in the Russian economy.

In comparison with a similar poll held three years ago, the share of people expecting changes for the better fell considerably, from 41% to 27%. And those expecting changes for the worse also rose from 17% to 27%.

The poll was held in the form of an interview between June 18 and 19 at the place of residence and covered 1,500 persons in 100 populated areas of 44 regions and republics of Russia. Also, 600 Moscow residents were polled in addition. The poll has a statistical error of 3.6%.
