The crew is expected to cover more than 9,000 kilometers until October. According to expedition head Oleg Volynkin, their main goal is to reach the Vilkitsky strait on time because the strait, located in the area of Chelyuskin Cape and Northern Land, is open for navigation only from August 28 to September 8.
The expedition will be coordinated by a satellite center in central Russia that will provide information on the ice situation to travelers.
Alexander Levanov, the crew captain, built the trimaran according to his own design based on the Polynesian method of shipbuilding. The vessel is elastic and smooth and can brave both storms and ices.
The expedition, Orion's Way, is devoted to the 90th anniversary of the Arctic Ocean hydrographic expedition, which was led by captain Boris Vilkitsky in 1915 on board the Vaigach and Taimyr vessels to cover a way from Russia's Far East to Arkhangelsk.
