Kremlin aide: improving Russia's image takes time

MOSCOW, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will need time to improve its image and should avoid a repetition of the Yukos case, a presidential aide said Thursday.

"We should try to avoid similar situations in the future, especially regarding other large and small companies inside the country," Igor Shuvalov said. He added that it should be made clear to everyone that the Yukos case was unique. "It will never be repeated," Shuvalov said.

According to him, the legislative base should be amended to let investors feel protected by the state. "We should support the judicial system to make investors feel freer and protected from administrative interference," Shuvalov said.

According to him, it is important to show investors that judges make their rulings in compliance with the law, and that no outside interference is allowed in their work.

Shuvalov said the priorities set by the president had to be implemented consistently to improve Russia's image.

However, the aide said the Kremlin rejected the idea that the Yukos case had affected Russia's image in the eyes of the G8 leaders of the world's most industrialized nations. It had only affected public opinion in those countries.

"The G8 leaders have differences on a few problems," Shuvalov said. "There are different views on various events, but, on the whole, their attitude to our country and President Putin is very positive."

He added that this conclusion was based on bilateral and multilateral meetings.

Shuvalov continued that much had to be done to eliminate the negative consequences of the Yukos case.
