New historical background for Russian-Chinese dialogue

MOSCOW, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russian-Chinese relations have taken a new course after the signing of a final agreement in early June put an end to 40 years of negotiations, a Kremlin source said Friday during Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit here.

"The dialogue between the heads of states has switched to the issues of mutually beneficial cooperation, in favor of the common people," a source in the Kremlin said.

According to the source, the new cooperation program lies in the joint action plan for implementing the provisions of the Agreement on Good-neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijin last October.

"During the meeting, the heads of states will observe progress in the joint action plan and will entrust relevant governmental departments with stepping up efforts related to the further development of bilateral ties," the source said.

The Supplementary Agreement on the Eastern Section of the China-Russia Boundary Line was signed by Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on June 2.

The agreement was the final stage in the process of legally demarkating the 4300km odd-boundary lines between two world superpowers.

"For the first time in history, Russia and China have obtained mutually recognized boundary lines along the whole length of the border," the source said. "This has put an end to speculation on the existance of a so-called territorial problem between our countries."

The source said no political problem could now affect the development of a Russian-Chinese strategic partnership.
