KALININGRAD, July 1 (RIA Novosti-Northwest, Anatoly Nilov) - The European Union will build a border pass on the Russian-Lithuanian border in the Kaliningrad region, a Russian exclave on Baltic Sea, the European Commission office in Russia said Friday.
The border pass will be built as part of a border cooperation program financed by the EU. "The project's budget is almost 8 million euros," said a source in the EC's Russian office. The source said the existing border pass, Chernyshevskoye, would be reconstructed to increase its traffic capacity to 1,150 cars, 300 trucks and 50 buses a day.
The construction will be completed by the end of 2005. The Russian Federal Customs Service and a representation of the Northwestern Customs in St. Petersburg are project partners.
Today, the Sovetsk-Panemune vehicle pass and the Chernyshevskoye-Kibartai railroad pass are open in the Kaliningrad region.
