MOSCOW, July 6 (RIA Novosti) - The residents of Transdnestr, a self-proclaimed republic in Moldova, see Russia as their main ally, according to a survey published Wednesday.

The poll, which was conducted by the Russian-Transdnestr Analysis Center in the run-up to parliamentary elections scheduled for winter 2005 and presidential elections in 2006, said 84.7% of respondents named Russia as Transdnestr's main supporter and ally. About 10% named Ukraine, 2.7% - Moldova, and 0.8% - the United States.

Transdnestr residents said they liked more the statement that the unrecognized republic was part of Russia (46.7%) than part of Moldova (5.5%). Moreover, 60.2% of Transdnestr residents would like to get Russian citizenship, 27.3% - Ukrainian, 9.9% - Moldovan, 1.7% - Romanian, and 0.9% - Polish citizenship.

In all, 53% of those polled said most of the republic's problems were because the international community had not recognized it. And 29% said they thought the ruling elite and laws had to be changed to resolve the most urgent issues.

Transdnestr residents said they were most of all alarmed by the economic crisis (40.1%), political instability (29.7%), and a threat to the state system (20.3%). Fifty-seven percent said they would vote in the coming parliamentary elections to change the situation.

Analysis Center head Alexei Martynov told a Wednesday press conference that the poll had been designed "to reveal the social temperature of society in Transdnestr on the threshold of parliamentary and presidential elections."

The survey was taken on June 1-15 and involved 1,600 Transdnestr residents.
