MOSCOW, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - The Transportation Ministry has proposed cutting the number of international airports in Russia and replacing them with major international hubs, minister Igor Levitin said Thursday.

He said that Russia had about 70 international airports. "We believe these airports should be replaced with several hubs," the minister added.

Levitin said that the latter would be built in eight Russian cities, including Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk and Krasnodar.

He also said that the distance between the hubs should be at least 500 kilometers with domestic airports ensuring links between them.
