London explosions "blackmail" for Iraq - expert

MOSCOW, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - The explosions in London represent an attempt by terrorists to blackmail Britain over its position on Iraq, a veteran of Russia's security services said Thursday.

"There can be no doubt that this is an attempt to [engage in] terrorist blackmail - terrorist organizations' reaction to the tough position Britain maintains on Iraq," said the source, who wished to remain anonymous.

The source said the explosions in London must have been planned by terrorist organizations operating in several areas. "An 'ambassador hunt' started recently in Baghdad - the Egyptian ambassador was kidnapped, the Bahraini ambassador was wounded, and the Russian and Pakistani embassies' cars came under fire," the source said.

He did not rule out that the terrorists had decided to strike London. The attention of the global community has been focused on London after the British capital won the right to host the 2012 Olympics, the source said. "This factor was probably also taken into account by terrorists."

The source said the explosions could have been connected with irreconcilable forces within the Irish Republican Army who disagreed with the political agreements reached by more moderate party members.

Another high-ranking anti-terror Russian expert told RIA Novosti that he thought this could have happened so easily because "representatives of a number of international extremist organizations feel free in Britain."

"Many representatives of different organizations connected with international terrorism, including financial organizations, do not conceal their presence and activity on British territory," the expert said.

London was hit by explosions Thursday, which, according to unconfirmed reports, killed at least 12 and left 90 people wounded.
