Production expands in Russia after two-month decline

MOSCOW, July 18 (RIA Novosti) - Industrial output has risen in Russia after a two-month decline, the Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat) said Monday.

According to Rosstat figures, industrial production grew by 8.7% in June 2005. It fell by 3.6% in April and by 6.4% in May after an 8.1% growth in March.

Industrial output grew by 4% in the first half of 2005 and by 4.1% in the second quarter of this year compared with the same periods in 2004. Industrial production expanded by 6.9% in June 2005 compared to the same period in 2004.

According to Rosstat figures, output increased by 1.4% in the production of natural resources, by 5.6% in manufacturing industries, and by 1.8% in electricity, gas and water production and distribution in the first six months of 2005. Output in these sectors expanded by 0.1%, 10.9%, and 0.6%, respectively, in June 2005, and by 0.8%, 6%, and 1% in the second quarter of this year.

In January-June 2005, the production of coal increased by 2.6% to 143 million metric tons, oil by 2.7% to 230 million metric tons, and gas by 0.9% to 324 billion cubic meters. However, iron ore output fell by 0.2% to 47.6 million metric tons.

Manufacturing industries largely posted production growth, but output fell by 4.9% to 3.8 million metric tons in the production of bread and bakery products and fell by 10.6% to 56.3 million metric tons in the production of vodka, liquor, and wine. The output of auto cars contracted by 6.5% to 501,000 in the first half of 2005.

However, meat production increased by 1.1% to 854,000 metric tons. Oil primary refining expanded by 5.3% to 99.8 million metric tons, the production of gasoline went up by 5.3% to 15.3 million metric tons, and diesel fuel by 6.8% to 28.7 million metric tons. The manufacture of finished ferrous metals expanded by 2.9% to 26.9 million metric tons.

The production of electricity went up by 2% to 480 billion kilowatt-hours and thermal energy by 1.2% to 814 million gigacalories.
