MOSCOW, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Emergencies Ministry has begun examining potentially dangerous sites of underwater disposal of hazardous substances in the seas of Russia's Far East, said a source in the ministry's press service.

"The Scientific research vessel Professor Khromov sets off Wednesday from the port of Vladivostok to the presumed sites of disposed hazardous substances," the source said.

"The scientific expedition to the Sea of Japan and the Okhotsk Sea will last 46 days. Three potentially dangerous sites of underwater disposal of hazardous substances will be examined within this period. The research will estimate the current conditions of the disposals, their potential danger and work out a scenario for the elimination of consequences of the possible spillage of the substances into the water," the source said.

He said the expedition would use the Sea Lion underwater apparatus and sonars for examinations. Scientists will take samples of seawater and sediments on the content of hazardous and poisonous substances.

The previous expeditions from 2003-2004 in the northern part of the Sea of Japan and the Okhotsk Sea revealed that the content of poisonous substances increased, but remained within the level of safety.
