MOSCOW, July 27 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Air Forces intend to form a mountain airborne assault detachment, the Commander of the Russian Air Forces said Wednesday.
"According to the confirmed program, the Air Forces will form airmobile assault airborne units, with one of them for operations in the mountains," Alexander Kolmakov said.
He said the new regiments are being formed to strengthen various branches of the Russian Armed Forces.
According to Kolmakov, the unit is meant for military operations in mountains away from main units.
"We also plan to widely use baggage animals to carry ammunition since it is hard to use military hardware in mountains," Kolmakov said.
