Muslim women in Moscow will be able to give birth in accordance with Sharia law

MOSCOW, July 28 (RIA Novosti) - In Moscow's Maternity Clinic No. 15, a center has been created for Muslim women to give birth in accordance with Sharia law, Kamilzhan Kalandarov, head of the Russian organization Al Khak ("justice"), said Thursday.

The chief doctor of the clinic, Vladimir Zaborsky, said Islam's requirements for giving birth are fairly simple.

"There must be no male doctors present at the birth, a naming ceremony must take place within a certain time, and the woman in labor must observe a particular diet," said Zaborsky.

The need to create such centers arises from the discomfort Muslim women feel in cases where the doctor's supervision and the birth procedure do not meet Sharia law, said Shafig Pshikhachev, a member of the Al Khak council.

The program was initiated by Al Khak. Any woman can use the center's services, including those with no Moscow registration or Russian citizenship, said Kalandarov.
