MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - On Friday in St. Petersburg, a Mongolian citizen was detained on suspicion of attacking British Ambassador to Russia Tony Brenton, an interior Ministry spokesman said. At the end of June, five unknown men attacked and robbed the British Ambassador on Nevsky Prospect, the city's principal street.
"The search for the culprits continues", said the spokesman. The name of the arrested suspect is being withheld pending investigations.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Yakovenko made an official announcement about the attack on 54-year-old Brenton (British ambassador since September 2004) and his wife, saying that "we hope that they [the attackers] will be found and brought to justice."
Criminal investigations were launched following the ambassador's statement to the police, Yakovenko said.
