VLADIVOSTOK, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - Although attacks on Russia's far east are unlikely, maintaining security there is an important task, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said. "An attack or invasion on, for example, Kamchatka, is highly unlikely to say the least", Ivanov said to journalists at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the administrative center of the Sakhalin region, before flying to Vladivostok. Ivanov said that keeping military units in this region up to date and equipping them with modern technology and weapons was "a very important task".

"We are now implementing this task", he said.

The modernization of military bases and units both in Russia's far east and in other regions of the country is needed, since in the 21st century the means of carrying out military action have fundamentally changed, he said.

Ivanov's visit is part of a working trip to inspect Far East Military District bases. On July 31 in Vladivostok (the Russian Pacific Fleet's main base), he will attend a navy parade of the fleet's ships, and will meet Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Viktor Fedorov.
