MINSK, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - Belarusian police detained five members of the Belarusian opposition Friday who were meeting in support of the Belarusian Union of Poles near the Polish Embassy in Minsk, the Belarusian capital.

The pro-governmental youth organization, the Belarusian Republican youth union, also gathered near the Polish Embassy, accusing the Polish side of cooling bilateral relations.

The congress that elected the new leadership of the Polish Union was ruled to be illegal by the Belarusian government. The pressure on the Polish Union triggered a negative reaction in Warsaw, and each side has expelled three diplomats in the past few months. Poland recalled its ambassador for consultations.

The EU and the United States support the union, which Minsk saw as interference in its internal affairs.

This week, Union Spokesman Andrzej Pisalnik was sentenced to 10 days in detention, Union Deputy Chairman Wieslaw Kiewlak and a founder of the organization Tadeusz Gawin was given 15 days for participating in unsanctioned meetings.
