NOVO-OGARYOVO, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's repertoire theater is part of the national heritage and should be preserved, Moscow Academic Art Theater director Oleg Tabakov said Thursday.
At a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and directors of theaters and drama colleges at his country residence, Tabakov said that theaters should "learn to earn money," but that the state has a responsibility to preserve Russian theater's best achievements.
Maly theater artistic director Yury Solomin praised the president's move to provide grants worth 405 million rubles ($14.3 million) for some of the oldest theaters and drama colleges.
"It seems we have been heard and understood," Solomin said. He also expressed his hope that Russian culture and theater would survive.
