MOSCOW, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva, who just broke the world record in women's pole vaulting, winning the world title at Helsinki, was quoted by a leading national newspaper Monday as saying that she now had her sights set on Olympic gold.
In an interview with the Novye Izvestiya daily, Isinbayeva, 23, said her record-breaking performance at this year's World Athletics Championships had boosted her confidence and that she now felt capable of winning the 2008 Beijing Olympics and setting "many more" records in the future.
The athlete told Izvestiya that until recently, she had had to catch up with other athletes whereas now they were all trailing behind. She is now building up momentum to sustain her leading position in pole vaulting for the coming years.
Isinbayeva, who cleared at the 5.01 meter mark, said her main goal had been to win the championship and that breaking the world record had not been part of her plan.
President Vladimir Putin congratulated Isinbayeva on her latest achievement. Prince Albert of Monaco joined the chorus of praise at the World Athletics Gala in Monte Carlo.
