GROZNY, August 20 (RIA Novosti) - A monument to first Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov was unveiled in Grozny's center Saturday morning.The ceremony was timed to coincide with the 54th anniversary of Kadyrov's birth.
Famous Moscow sculptor Zurab Tsereteli created the 13.5-meter tall monument.
Incumbent Chechen President Alu Alkhanov and Prime Minister Sergei Abramov attended the ceremony. Akhmad Kadyrov's son Ramzan was absent.
"Kadyrov is a man who gave his life for the freedom of Chechen people," Alkhanov said. "I am convinced that descendants will build other monuments to Kadyrov."
A memorial plate with names of killed soldiers and associated of Akhmad Kadyrov was also unveiled on Kadyrov Square.
Kadyrov was killed in a terrorist act in Grozny on May 9, 2004.
