KAZAN, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin made a speech in the Tatar language at a millennial celebration in Kazan, Tatarstan Friday.
The president's attempt to speak the local language was greeted with rapturous applause.
Putin then continued in Russian: "For those who have just started learning Tatar and didn't understand what I just said, I'll translate just one part into Russian - Kazan has played a truly unique historical role in creating a united Russian nation."
